From the friendly suburbs of Seattle, Washington comes a young sextet who has managed to occupy a distinct corner of modern rock and roll music. A smartly plotted musical structure prepares the way for a crushing but undeniably fitting wall of three guitars, which are equaled and sustained by unrelentingly quick drum mechanics. The bass guitar adds even further dimension to this already intense combination by adding evocative amounts of depth. And, soaring over the eloquent result of this dynamic syncopation are the well-rounded and unyielding vocals of singer Jordan Tolentino.
"We are not just a heavy rock band, and we don't just play music," explains bass-guitarist Steven Vanderzee, when asked about Bilateral's identity. "We let it bleed out from our hearts and fingertips- sometimes literally -what we feel, etc. It's our passion. We love it." "We just write music that hits us hard and moves us," adds guitarist Aaron Smith, "because that's what music is all about: being moved by it."
In addition to this solid musicianship, strikingly heartfelt lyrics emerge to complete the balance between those two key elements. At a first glance, Bilateral's lyrics have even been mistaken as depressed or bleak. But, a deeper evaluation reveals that there is always a hopeful focal point, where most importantly, God is looked and pointed towards for the essential guidance that only He can provide. "There are far more than enough destructive messages out there in the world today, and we're just here to share the hope and purpose in life that we receive through our faith in God, and to share it in as non-threatening of a way as possible" further communicates Smith. "We don't at all force our message on the listener any more than other artists do. Of course it's a hope of ours that the listener will connect with our music, but how they make that connection is left completely up to them."
The enthusiasm that Bilateral has for their craft also becomes easily visible within the context of the energy-filled live performance that they strive to be characterized by. Whether it be the application of a certain single aspect of the band, or the sharpened result of the whole, the audience is sure to sample a taste of the passion that each and every member has been filled with. "The thing I love most about playing shows is the feeling of escape," reveals singer Jordan Tolentino. "When I'm on stage, nothing else matters. I feel so free and feel this stellar kind of peace that I only get from performing. It's transcendental, and it inspires me."
Despite a lead vocalist change in late 2003, the vast hard work and dedication that Bilateral has so eagerly adhered to since their start in April of 2002 has more than paid off. Each and every aspect of Bilateral has progressed and matured, which is a pattern that will always continue to define the band in the future. And, with a future that only grows more promising the further that it plays out, Bilateral maintains confidence that their ongoing progression and talents will soon enough prove to be unimaginably invaluable.
